When Comfort Becomes the King

Updated: Aug 8, 2025

Comfort. We all crave it. We all feel adrift when it's missing. There is nothing wrong with enjoying yourself and nice things.

As full-time liveaboard sailors, we do our best to make our catamaran feel like home—cozy, safe, and inviting.

Sunrise over calm waters from the back of a catamaran, embodying a serene surrender to spiritual peace amidst the allure of material comfort.

But somewhere along the way, I began to ask myself: When does the pursuit of comfort become something more? When does it slip from a blessing into an idol?

It’s easy to chase after physical ease—fresh linen, hot long showers, the ideal breeze. Yes, living on the water has required me to let go of many material comforts, but that’s not the “heart” of the matter.

The real breakthrough came this morning—not through anything external, but through the overwhelming presence of the Holy Spirit.

In that sacred moment, I realized: Nothing can compare to the comfort that comes from the Father above.

When we place comfort on the throne of our hearts, we lose sight of the true King. But when we surrender that space to Him, He fills it with a peace and presence no pillow, possession, or perfect circumstance ever could.

I’m learning to stop striving to fill my comfort cup with the temporary—and instead let it overflow with the eternal.

Prayer from today’s glorify devotional: Lord let all of the darkness of our souls vanish before the beams of Your brightness. Fill us with holy love and open to us the treasures of Your wisdom. All our desires are known to you. Perfect what you started, what your spirit has awakened in us to ask in prayer. We seek your face, turn yours to us and show us your glory. Then our longing will be satisfied and our peace perfect. Amen!
